Park and Recreation Department to Host Hershey’s Track & Field Games
DES MOINES — Des Moines Parks and Recreation is encouraging Greater Des Moines Area boys and girls ages 9-14 to compete in the annual Hershey’s Track & Field Games to be held Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at the Hoover High School Track. Registration is free and is now open for the events which will include the 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, 4 x 100 meter relay, standing long jump, and softball throw.
Winners of the Des Moines contest will advance to the state/provincial meet on Saturday, June 12 in Marshalltown. State/provincial meet winners do not automatically advance to the North American Final but rather are entered into a regional pool and become eligible for selection to a Regional Team which will travel to Hershey, Pennsylvania to compete in the North American Final which will be held Saturday, August 7, 2010.
Hershey’s Track & Field Games is designed to encourage physical fitness among youth and emphasize participation and sportsmanship. They have involved millions of youngsters from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the ten provinces and three territories of Canada. The competition is sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association, USA Track and Field, Athletics Canada and by The Hershey Company, with the Des Moines Park and Recreation Department hosting the local qualifying event.
Registration forms can be picked up at Pioneer Columbus Community Center, 4-Mile Community Center, and the Des Moines City Hall Information Center, 400 Robert D. Ray Drive or they can be downloaded at www.dmparks.org. A separate entry form is needed for each person participating.
Volunteers are also needed to assist with this event. Those interested in volunteering are asked to email the department’s volunteer supervisor at parksvolunteer@dmgov.org or call 237-1404.
