Rush for Sports: The Key to Success in Youth Coaching

What’s the key to success in youth coaching? Is it knowledge of the game? The ability to teach fundamentals? Yes, those are extremely important but the number one ingredient for success in youth sports?

PATIENCE.

We all want our kids and teams to perform well. But time and time again I hear from other coaches that they just wish their team could avoid that one terrible inning, that stretch where kids blow three layups in a row and if they would just remember to block the defensive end. Kids are going to make mistakes and they make them frequently. So how we react as coaches is critical to providing a great atmosphere for kids – win or lose. Do we act as if we are the second coming of Bobby Knight or do we handle the difficult situations with the grace of Tony Dungy?

There’s no way to always be perfect, but when things go wrong, take a deep breath and remember it’s just a kid’s game.
