Iowa Youth Qualify for AAU National Track and Field Championships in Virginia
MINNEAPOLIS, Mn. – While most of us were celebrating the July 4th weekend with friends and family, a group of kids were in Minnesota hoping to qualify for the AAU National Track and Field Championships in Norfolk, Virginia July 31-August 7 on the campus of Norfolk State University. Teams from central Iowa that had youth participating were from the Des Moines Area Youth Track Club coached by Phil Ferguson; Track Iowa coached by Larry Jackson and Excalibur Track Club coached by Cortez Nichols. The AAU regional included kids form the ages of 5 through 16. The age divisions are broken down into nine groups. The Primary Division is for anybody born in 2002 and after. The Sub Bantam Division are born in 2001; Bantam Division in 2000; Sub Midget Division in 1999; Midget in 1998; Sub Youth Division in 1997; Youth Division in 1996; Intermediate Division in 1994-1995 and Young Men and Women Division in 1991-1992.

When it came to the young ladies Ajae Anderson, 12 years old, of the Des Moines Area Track Club won the girl’s 80 meter hurdles midget division title in a new record time of 13.57. Javone Mayes, 12 years old of the Des Moines Area Track Club won the 100 meter hurdles in the Sub Youth Division.
Jalynn Roberts-Lewis, 14 years old of the Track Iowa Track Club was the champion in the 100 meter dash in the youth division. Dajah Baptista, 8 years old was crowned the champion in the 100 meter dash primary division.
In the shot put in the primary division it was Dimaucia Phanfil, 7 years olds who posted the top throw at 16-10.00, a new meet record.
The young men list of champions were Justice Young, 11 years old of the Des Moines Area Track Club was the boy’s winner in the 80 meter hurdles midget in 15.03. Elijah Young, 14 years old of the Excaliburs Track Club won the 100 meter hurdles in the youth division with a new meet record time of 15.64. Joe Gorsche, 13 years old won the 400 meter dash title in the sub-youth division.
