Dubuque Hempstead; Iowa City West Roll into 4A State Baseball Semifinals
DES MOINES, Iowa - The final round of Iowa high school state baseball quarterfinals were completed on Wednesday at Principal Park in Des Moines. Listed below are the stories reported by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.
#5 Dubuque Hempstead 10, Indianola 0 (6)
Dubuque Hempstead put up 10 runs over six innings against Indianola and starting pitcher Andrew Redman threw six shutout innings as the Mustangs beat the Indians 10-0 in the first class 4A quarterfinal Wednesday afternoon at Principal Park.
The Mustangs got on the board early as they put up a run in the bottom of the first. Brad Duwe singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Redman.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of Dubuque until the bottom of the fourth when the Mustangs tallied another three runs.
With two outs in the fourth, Hempstead rattled off four straight singles and got help on an error from shortstop Alex Gross to plate three runs and chase Indianola starter Michael Chia from the mound. At the end of the fourth inning, the Mustangs held a 4-0 advantage.
Hempstead got back to work in the bottom of the sixth off of Indians’ reliever Mark Eubank. Eubank allowed three runs without recording an out as the first four batters reached on three singles and a walk.
After a sacrifice fly from Jon Reed to make the score 8-0, Eubank walked Toby Decker and was relieved by Brandon Abernathy. Abernathy walked the first batter he faced, Duwe, to load the bases. Redman then smacked a fly ball to center field which brought in Decker from third. Center fielder Marshall Mahr attempted a throw to third to cut down Duwe, trying to advance from second. The ball instead found the dugout and allowed Duwe to take home, giving Hempstead the victory.
Redman (10-0) remained undefeated on the season with the win, giving up only two hits in his complete-game effort. He walked one and struck out six.
Starter Chia (7-1) took the loss for Indianola, his first of the season. Chia gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits over three and two-thirds innings.
Hempstead advances to the semifinals where they will play the winner of Sioux City North and Iowa City West on Friday at 6 p.m. at Principal Park.
#3 Iowa City West 11, #6 Sioux City North 1 (6)
Iowa City West put up two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back as they went on to defeat Sioux City North 11-1 in six innings Wednesday afternoon at Principal Park.
Starting pitcher Ryan Rumpf had a terrific game on the mound and at the plate. He pitched a complete game over six innings and surrendered only one run on three hits. With the win, he improves to 11-0 on the season. He also had a great day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double, single, walk and sacrifice fly. He led Iowa City with a team-high three RBIs.
Rumpf got things started for the Trojans in the bottom of the first inning. With two on and one out, he hit a two-run double to give his team a 2-0 lead.
Sioux City came within one of Iowa City, scoring their lone run in the top of the third. Danny Rudeen doubled to lead of the third, advanced to third on a single from Blake Meacham and scored on a wild pitch.
It would be all Iowa City from that point on as the Trojans put together back-to-back three-run innings in the third and fourth innings to boost their lead to 8-1.
Iowa City West continued to dominate Sioux City’s pitching in the bottom of the sixth. Rumpf hit a leadoff single and pinch-runner Leo Franz stole second. After David Rachke walked, Sioux City pitcher Dylan Ohl retired the next two before issuing another walk to Aaron Peller. That set up Tommy Heinrich’s two-run double into the gap in left-center field that ended the game at 11-1.
Sioux City starter Eric McGlauflin (8-3) took the loss for the Stars. McGlauflin tossed three and one-thirds innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits.
Iowa City moves to 29-9 on the season and will play Dubuque Hempstead in the first class 4A semifinal Friday at 6 p.m. at Principal Park.
