#1 Solon; Kuemper Catholic Scrap into 2A State Baseball Championship
DES MOINES, Iowa – The 2010 Iowa High School State Baseball Tournament moved into the semifinals round on Thursday with Class 1A getting it all started with the defending champs Newman Catholic (Mason City) facing St. Mary’s (Remsen) in the first semifinals and Martensdale-St. Mary’s and Preston meeting in game two.
#1 Solon 12, Columbus Catholic (Waterloo) 9
Solon and Waterloo Columbus Catholic combined for 26 hits and 21 runs and fought a see-saw battle in the first class 2A semifinal that the Spartans eventually won, 12-9, Thursday night at Principal Park. Solon’s victory is its third over the Sailors this year and clinches a spot in the finals for the Spartans after they were eliminated in the semifinals the past two years.
Top-ranked and top-seeded Solon found itself down early, 7-3, but climbed back into the game in large part because of a seven-run third inning.
Both Solon and Columbus got to work right off the bat, scoring early and often. Solon put up two runs in the top of the first on back-to-back RBI singles from Shawn Olson and Brandon Shulista to give the Spartans an early 2-0 lead.
Columbus came right back in their half of the first as the Sailors batted around. Craig Konrardy singled to begin the inning before starting pitcher Nick Day was able to retire the next two. However, the next five batters reached for Columbus. Three straight singles tied the score at 2-2 and a crucial error on second baseman Shulista allowed the inning to continue as the Sailors plated two more runs for a 4-2 lead.
Solon scored a run on an RBI single from Day to cut Columbus’ lead in half in the top of the second before the Sailors batted around for the second consecutive inning.
After Konrardy was retired on a fielder’s choice and Shane Kemp took first, Nick Maas doubled to put runners on second and third. Ben Knipp then hit a sharp grounder to third base as Tyler Smith fielded the ball and threw home to try and cut down Kemp. The throw deflected off the helmet of Kemp and skipped into the first base dugout to allow two runs to score. Knipp advanced to second on the error, took third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch to give Columbus a 7-3 advantage.
The scoring was far from over as the top-ranked Spartans put up a seven spot in the top of the third.
Smith grounded out to begin the inning and the next six Solon players reached base and eventually scored. The big hit of the inning came from center fielder Derrick Loveless who blasted a triple to left-center field that cleared the bases for three RBIs. Solon sent 11 players to the plate and scored seven runs on five hits to give them their second lead of the game at 10-7.
Loveless led his top-ranked Spartans at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, three RBIs and two runs scored.
The final four innings the contest were in stark contrast to the beginning of the game, as the teams combined for only three more runs.
Solon and Columbus both added a run to their tallies in the fifth inning and Solon added an extra insurance run in the top of the seventh.
Each starting pitcher didn’t last very long on the mound.
Solon starter Day only pitched an inning and one-third. He gave up seven runs (four earned) on six hits.
Waterloo Columbus starting pitcher Jon Heinzman lasted two and one-third innings. Heinzman served up seven runs on six hits.
Ryan Butler (9-0) got the win for Solon. The junior tossed four and two-thirds innings and surrendered only two runs (one earned) on six hits.
Mike Letkewicz (5-4), who came on in relief for Heinzman in the third inning, picked up the loss. Letkewicz pitched four and one-third innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits.
Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) 5, #3 Davis County (Bloomfield) 4 (8)
Carroll Kuemper Catholic took advantage of five Davis County errors, the last of which allowed the winning run to score in the eighth inning, as the Knights walked off with an extra-inning win over the Mustangs, 5-4.
With the win, Kuemper advances to the Class 2A finals where it will play top-ranked and number one seed Solon.
Kuemper was able to take an early 2-0 lead as Davis County starting pitcher Josh Martsching put the leadoff man on in his first three innings of work and Kuemper took advantage in the second and third.
Bryce Berg walked to start the bottom of the second inning, took second base on a wild pitch and moved to third on a single from Tyler Naberhaus. Casey Berg walked to load the bases and Martsching issued his fourth walk of the game that forced in Berg and gave the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Kuemper added to their lead in the bottom of the third after Ethan Schoeppner reached first on a hit-by-pitch. Schoeppner stole second and advanced to third after the throw from Davis County catcher Kyle Graves bounced over the shortstop. Pitcher Kent Knobbe then hit a ground ball straight to the shortstop Calvin Mathews. Mathews decided to throw home in an attempt to cut down Schoeppner. The throw arrived late and Kuemper took a 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs got their offense going in the fifth inning. Josh Martsching singled to lead off the inning and Knights’ pitcher Knobbe walked Zach Fligg to put two men on with no outs. Knobbe was relieved by Chris Halbur who was greeted with a two-run triple from Coleton Mathews. Calvin Mathews then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Mustangs a 3-2 advantage.
Davis County looked to be in control of the game, as they added an insurance run in the top of the sixth on back-to-back doubles and had retired eight straight Kuemper batters.
A pair of costly errors allowed the Knights to get back in the game in the bottom of the sixth. Naberhaus led off with a single and Casey Berg reached on an error by the second baseman. After the error at second, the pitcher Martsching was relieved by Chris Halbur. Halbur successfully got two outs and appeared to be out of the inning when another error was committed. Cody Williams skied a ball to left field that the Mustang left-fielder appeared to catch but then dropped out of his glove. The error allowed the Knights to score two runs to knot the game a 4-4.
It would be Naberhaus again who got the magic going for Kuemper in the bottom of the eighth. He singled to lead off the inning and Casey Berg put a sacrifice bunt down the third base line. It was cleanly fielded by Nic Johnson but the throw sailed over the first baseman's head and allowed Naberhaus to score from first to end the game.
Halbur (11-1) got the win in relief for Kuemper. He pitched four innings and gave up two runs on three hits. Halbur struck out five and walked none.
Calvin Mathews (15-1) received the loss, his first of the year. He gave up one run (none earned) on one hit in two innings.
Davis County ends their season and 34-2.
